Words of 2020: Balance & Be

For me, 2020 is all about intentions. And these words are going to help me throughout the year.

Last week,

I mentioned that I picked a few words to bring me through the new year

. I picked them based off some recent life changes as well as what I want to come in 2020 and beyond. I decided that I’m going to go in more depth about why I picked each word for this year.

balance

This word gets thrown around a lot, but life truly is all about balance. In 2020, there are so many areas that I want to both

continue

and

improve

the balance in my life.

  • Work

Obviously, I’ve been balancing two jobs for a long time (almost 6 years to be exact). There are always things I can be doing better or more efficiently, so that’s probably my biggest focus. I notice when I get into a slump or rut with work, my blog suffers because I just feel super unmotivated. I always have so many ideas for content, but often I just

    don’t

get things done in advance. And I should. Over the holiday break, I planned out and wrote all of my January content (with the exception of The Friday Edits). Since things were slower at work over the holidays, it was so nice to put my website and social media first.

  • Fitness

I’ve always been pretty active. But I definitely get into these ruts where I just don’t feel like working out. I obviously feel better when I sweat, but

    getting

there is the biggest battle. Especially when I’m busy at work and just want to go home after. This year, I want to create a better balance. And take classes that are

    good

for my body. With my back issues, I realized there are two things I need more of: Yoga and core work. I’m starting to really get into my yoga practice. I want to deepen my practice in 2020 to help mentally and physically, as well as do classes like DanceBody Sculpt to help strengthen my core – which will then improve my posture and decrease my back pain.

  • Social

I need to do a better job at balancing my social life. There are days I REALLY just don’t want to do anything after work. And then I end up missing out on some really great times. I remember a few weeks ago, ALL of my old coworkers got together. I was at work a little bit later, and chose to go to a yoga class instead of seeing them. In 2020, I need to be more social and take advantage of being able to catch up with friends.

And while we’re on the topic of balance, I have a HUGE yoga goal: BALANCE poses. Right now, I’m trying really hard to get crow pose down. So far, I’m able to balance for about 2 seconds before losing it. By the end of the year, I want to be able to

go from crow pose to a headstand

(and eventually back to crow and into chaturanga)!

be

This word takes on so many meanings. I’m focusing on just being present. I’m often too caught up in things and never

truly

appreciate them. Whether I’m making sure I get content for Instagram while I’m out and about, or trying to watch a show but feel distracted by my phone (no joke, I have to rewind shows like 3-4 times per episode to catch up on something I’ve missed)…I need to learn how to simply just

be.

It sounds simple and easy, but it’s not. I’ve come to realize the smallest adjustments make big differences. And you have to be happy with the small wins. Ya know?

I was thinking about this over the holidays. Instead of taking pictures to immediately post to social media, I took them because I wanted to create memories with my loved ones. I wanted to be sure I documented happy times with my family. It’s so nice to be able to go back and look through photos whenever I want and think about all of the fun/happy memories I have with my family and friends!

Balance and Be are two words that I know I’ll be referencing heavily throughout 2020. Be sure to check back in next week for the next two words!
